HudsonAlpha has $1.3 billion impact on Alabama since opening

Huntsville’s HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology has had an economic impact on Alabama exceeding $1.3 billion since its first full year of operations in 2006, according to a new study by the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
The study also says HudsonAlpha and its associate companies have generated 1,177 jobs in Alabama.
HudsonAlpha was founded in 2005 as a nonprofit corporation by Huntsville innovators Jim Hudson and Lonnie McMillian to do genetic research, develop biotechnology companies, and educate Alabama students and teachers about genomics. It has a 270,000-squarefoot main facility on a 152-acre campus and works with universities, institutes, schools and organizations across the state.

Space System Uses Sunlight to Power Spacecraft and Redirect Asteroids

Earlier this year, we reported on a machine boasting a high-efficiency laser that could be used to de-orbit high-risk space debris. Now, a professor of electrical and computer engineering has taken things one step further.
In addition to being able to redirect asteroids, Dr. Richard Fork’s space-bound system can be used to generate and deliver energy to spacecraft. The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) professor recently patented his technology.
