Mercedes supplier SMP to open $150M facility in Tuscaloosa, creating 650 jobs

Alabama has landed another auto supplier that will bring over 600 new jobs to Tuscaloosa County.
Samvardhana Motherson Group, a Mercedes-Benz supplier, plans to invest $150 million in a new manufacturing facility in Tuscaloosa, creating 650 jobs by the fourth year of operation, a report from the Department of Commerce’s Made in Alabama website confirmed.
The 700,000-square-foot facility will be located in the Cedar Cove Technology Park, less than four miles from the Mercedes-Benz manufacturing facility.

The office has all the trappings of a high-tech startup. There’s a giant beanbag in the foyer and erasable, white board walls for brainstorming. Someone’s pet dog lounges happily on the sunny balcony.
Welcome to the Palo Alto home of the Ford Motor Co., six miles from the headquarters of Google.
Meanwhile, in a squat, industrial building in suburban Detroit, a short drive from Ford’s headquarters, workers are busy building a small fleet of driverless cars.
The company behind them? Google.

US Industrial Output Rises on Strong Auto Production

NEW YORK-U.S. industrial production rose in July, with a strong gain in automobile manufacturing offsetting lower output from utilities, the Federal Reserve reported Friday.
Industrial output increased 0.6% in July, far above the revised 0.1% gain in June.
Output of motor vehicles and parts jumped 10.6%. Gains elsewhere in manufacturing rose 0.1%.
The strength in autos compensated for a 1.0% drop in the index for utilities.
