IoT at M&T: An Inside Look at Toyota Operations Technology

On Wednesday, three Toyota Motor North America executives joined IndustryWeek’s Manufacturing & Technology Conference to talk about the role IT plays in the Toyota Production System and the company’s outlook on automation and the Internet of Things.

First, Jeff Moore, Senior Vice President, Unit Plants/Lexus Leader shared some statistics. Toyota has six vehicle assembly plants in the U.S., with 14 plants overall in North America.Some 365,000 U.S. jobs have been created as a direct result of Toyota operations.

Hyundai rolls out new Eco model in Montgomery

The Hyundai assembly plant in Montgomery is gearing up to produce compact SUVs, but it’s also playing to an entirely different segment of the market by rolling out a new fuel efficient “Eco” version of the Elantra sedan.

The 2017 Elantra Eco features an all new engine that gets an EPA-estimated 35 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving.

It might seem like a strange focus area for a company that’s pushing to gain market share in the hot SUV segment.

The marriage of Manufacturing and IoT: It has been called Industrial Internet, Digitization of Manufacturing, and Manufacturing 4.0. It has been hailed as a revolution and declared as win-win. With all this talk of marrying the two, we would be remiss not to heed the warnings that half of all marriages end in divorce.
