Area’s economic future built on manufacturing

Montgomery has built more than 3 million cars in the past decade. It has also built a new economy, one that’s fueled by the suddenly resurgent auto industry.

Alabama’s Capital City has long relied on state and military jobs, but everything started changing in 2002 when Hyundai announced it would open its first America production plant here. The $1.7 billion Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama assembly plant makes the company’s two most popular vehicles in North America.

10 Steps to Create a Continuous Improvement Culture

Camcraft began its continuous improvement journey four years ago. And, as Steve Olsen, executive vice president, shared, it was not a smooth ride for the automotive components supplier.

“When you are attempting a cultural change, it’s a bit like a cultural war…but it’s a good war,” Olsen said. “Like any meaningful change, it takes work.”

In August 2012, when the continuous improvement effort began, only about 10 percent of employees were immediately on board.

How Small Manufacturers Can Leverage Smart Manufacturing

I see three ways in which smaller manufacturers can leverage Smart Manufacturing.

The first is the way applicable to all manufacturers-using today’s affordable sensors to get better data, then using that data to fine-tune the process, decrease variability and remove bottlenecks. All of these bring costs down and drive quality up.

Now let’s talk about the other two ways-ways that are specific to the smaller manufacturer.
