Airbus Alabama ‘double milestone’ as Spirit claims its first aircraft

MOBILE, Alabama – An A321 wearing the bright yellow of Spirit Airlines was delivered to Spirit employees today during a ceremony that marked a “double milestone” for the Airbus Alabama operation.

The aircraft was the 10th produced at Airbus’ manufacturing facility in Mobile and the first delivered to Florida-based Spirit Airlines, a major customer. Spirit sent 140 employees to the delivery ceremony at Mobile Aeroplex.

U.S. Steelmaker Nucor to Buy Independence Tube for $435 Million

Nucor Corp., the largest U.S. steelmaker, agreed to acquire Independence Tube Corp. for $435 million as metal producers benefit from a recovery in prices and look to boost their presence in value-added products.

ITC makes hollow structural section steel tubing from plants in Illinois and Alabama, close to Nucor’s sheet mills, the Charlotte, North Carolina-based company said Monday in a statement. The purchase price represents six times average earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization over the 2013-2015 period, it said.

How to Choose Metrics to Drive Continuous Improvement

QUESTION: I am trying to develop a list of metrics to drive our continuous improvement efforts. What questions should I be asking myself to develop this list? And how many do you think I should focus on?

ANSWER: It isn’t clear what leadership role this person is playing so I’ll address this from a plant manager’s (or higher) perspective. I’ll share my thinking behind metrics in general and later get down to very specific, critical metrics that all factories should be using to drive continuous improvements.
