NASA’s Alabama hub simulates space hazards to advance exploration

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – Inside Building 4605 at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, there’s a portal to space and all of its extreme conditions.
It’s called the High Intensity Solar Environment Test system, or HISET. NASA says the device’s chamber is the only place on earth where spacecraft systems and materials can, at the same time, be subjected to the vacuum, temperatures, solar photons and other harsh conditions encountered in space travel.

Daimler To Offer 3D-Printed Spare Truck Parts

Daimler plans to resolve lengthy backlogs in spare parts for its Mercedes-Benz cargo trucks with the help of 3D printing.
The German truck maker – the world’s largest – on Wednesday announced plans to make 30 plastic spare parts available via 3D printers beginning in September.

Raytheon Cleared for Likely $2.6 Billion in New Missile Orders

After a series of setbacks, Raytheon Co. cleared two hurdles needed to receive a new contract and likely full-production approval this year of a top missile interceptor for which the Pentagon wants to spend as much as $2.6 billion.
Missile Defense Agency inspectors have concluded that an October test failure of the weapon wasn’t the result of systemic quality failures, agency spokesman Christopher Johnson said via e-mail. Furthermore, Raytheon demonstrated in May during two flight tests that it managed to fix a glitch with a third-stage rocket motor that caused two earlier failures, Johnson added.
