With three busy vehicle assembly factories, a major engine plant and a vast supplier network that stretches across the state, it’s no surprise that a large part of Alabama’s recent job growth has been driven by the auto industry.
The state’s durable goods manufacturing sector has grown by nearly 26,000 jobs over the past five years, according to the latest data from the University of Alabama’s Center for Business and Economic Research

GE Seeks to Drive 3D Printing Future With $1.4 Billion in Deals

General Electric Co. placed a $1.4 billion bet on the future of factory production by purchasing a pair of 3D-printer companies, marking one of the most significant endorsements of the technology yet.
The industrial giant offered to buy Sweden’s Arcam AB and Germany’s SLM Solutions Group AG in separate transactions, GE said in a statement Tuesday. The acquisitions will bolster GE’s existing manufacturing operations and help the company build a $1 billion 3D-printing business by 2020, it said.

Alabama-made Atlas V rockets to lift NASA to asteroid, Mars

Alabama-made Atlas V rockets will launch a NASA spacecraft on a dramatic mission to rendezvous with an asteroid and later send Mars 2020, the space agency’s nextgeneration robotic rover, to the Red Planet.
First up is the lift-off of the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, scheduled for Sept. 8 at Florida’s Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The United Launch AllianceAtlas V, assembled in Decatur, will boost the explorer on its way to the near-Earth asteroid Bennu.
